The Flint Bundle

Think you know Flint? Think again! Our Flint bundle features two titles that show readers how much more there is to Vehicle City beyond poisoned water and lost jobs.

Happy Anyway: A Flint Anthology, edited by Scott Atkinson, paints an intimate portrait of life in Flint, in all its facets: growing up and making do; getting out and coming home again. With contributions from teachers, students, journalists, poets, and many more, Happy Anyway gives you Flint in all its messy joy and heartbreak.

Standpipe: Delivering Water in Flint, by David Hardin, offers a personal look at the Flint water crisis, as experienced from behind the wheel of a Red Cross Disaster Recovery Vehicle. Hailed by Kirkus as "a heartfelt portrait of a city, and a man, grieving, Standpipe traces Hardin's stint as a Red Cross volunteer, and twines his narrative with a personal story of familial grief. Writing in the Washington Post, Kerri Arsenault described Hardin's prose as "like sun shining through trees, revealing light and shadow, hope and despair."
