Edited by Jacqueline Marino
"One after another, the writers and artists in this anthology vouch for the burning truth of Youngstown's life, all its filth and hardness and sweetness and soul, until it feels eternal."-David Giffels, author of The Hard Way on Purpose: Essays and Dispatches from the Rust Belt, on the first edition.
When Car Bombs to Cookie Tables: The Youngstown Anthology was published in 2015, it sold out its first two printings within months. The essays, poems, and photos in the anthology touched a nerve with Youngstown residents and expats, as well as a national audience fascinated with this paradigmatic Rust Belt city. Five years later—Belt is proud to publish an updated edition of this book, with new essays by Jen Vanderpool, Sherry Lee Linkon, Henry Gomez, and others.
The Youngstown story often is told with a beginning in iron and steel and ending in decay with a subplot driven by violent mobsters and corrupt politicians. Aiming to provide a more well-rounded examination of Youngstown, this collection of essays provides an authentic look at the city through a diverse set of experiences from the perspectives of those who have lived there. Readers will gain a sense of the past, present, and future of the city. Edited by Jacqueline Marino and Will Miller, the book features contributions by Christopher Barzak, Rochelle Hurt, Eric Murphy, Ed O’Neill, Sarah Sepanek, David Skolnick, Sarah Stankorb, C Lee Tressell, Jay Williams, Andrea Wood & 35 others.
